Original essayDifferent, unique, special.
If we were given a chance to be unique from everyone or be better than everyone, we would choose being unique.
But why do we desire to be unique, to be treated special, and most importantly why not be better than the person next to you?
The desire to be better than the person next to you also comes from a place of a desire to feel special — that you are the only one there, no one like you who can do the job.
In this world, anyone can replace you, that's a fact. No matter how many hours you work, there will always be someone who would outwork you. However, I have noticed a pattern in nature: nature rewards those who are different, not necessarily those who are better.
This concept extends beyond nature and finds its place in the business world as well. Companies strive to create exclusivity around their products, making customers feel special and unique when they possess them.
But from this deep burning desire to be unique comes a burden of jealousy.
Jealousy arises from a sense of insecurity and fear of loss. When we compare ourselves to others and feel inadequate, jealousy takes hold.
The best approach is to look at ourselves as a whole. Often, when we compare ourselves to others, we fixate on specific areas of our lives and end up feeling jealous. We forget to consider the bigger picture.
That is why you are who you are, for a reason.
